New Website Provides Housing Resources to Local Governments

LocalHousingSolutions.org provides resources to help cities, towns, and counties develop comprehensive and balanced local housing strategies that enhance affordability, protect low-income residents from displacement, and foster inclusive neighborhoods.

The non-partisan site was uniquely developed out of a National Community of Practice (CoP) on Local Housing Policy, a collaborative project of the NYU Furman Center and Abt Associates. The website was structured by a core working group of the CoP, comprised of many of the nation’s leading housing experts and practitioners. LocalHousingSolutions.org provides guidance on the full array of housing policy tools available to local government, including: planning, zoning, tax, permitting, city/county subsidy, and housing authority tools.

LocalHousingSolutions.org provides an extensive resource library available to local governments, organized under eight verbs. Each section (Learn, Plan, Analyze, Act, Fund, Refine, Bridge, and Explore) corresponds to a different step in the process of developing and implementing local housing strategy. Additionally, the site offers a housing policy framework outlining four distinct dimensions of an effective local housing strategy, with write-ups introducing key policy components and links to materials providing more information.

Housing supply and affordability constitute ongoing challenges for communities of every size, and crafting an adaptable, comprehensive, and balanced housing strategy can be a daunting task. LocalHousingSolutions.org provides resources and materials for communities to focus on key issues related to housing, learn more about specific policies, or assess their existing strategies to enhance local affordability and foster inclusive communities.
