On June 22, GOPC’s Director of Strategic Engagement Jason Warner was a guest on Spectrum New 1 Ohio’s In Focus to discuss GOPC’s work as an advocate for brownfield remediation across the state. During the segment, Jason discussed what are brownfields, where brownfields are located and how many exist in Ohio, as well as our recent partnership with the Ohio EPA in hosting our third Ohio Brownfield Conference in Westerville.
GOPC has been the leading statewide advocate for the creation of the Brownfield Remediation Program (BRP), working with lawmakers for nearly a decade to create and maintain a source of funds to clean-up the thousands of known brownfield sites across the state.
The work continues, as lawmakers are currently debating the future of the BRP as part of the state budget deliberations. GOPC is also championing the creating of a permanent, dedicated and fully-funded brownfield program through stand-alone legislation. House Bill 93, sponsored by Representatives Thomas Hall (R) and Bride Sweeney (D) has received one hearing in the House Finance Committee since it was introduced in February 2025.
We will continue to work with the legislature after the completion of the budget work and summer recess, to see that House Bill 93 continues to be debated in the legislature, with the goal of having the new, permanent program in place by the time the next state budget process begins in early 2027.
