Greater Ohio Policy Center (GOPC) is excited to announce the release our latest white paper, Fueling a Modern Mobility System for Ohio: A Blueprint for Stronger Communities. This paper looks at the whole of Ohio's transportation network, how it's funded, and steps to create a modern network.
Highway construction and maintenance is among the largest expenditures the state of Ohio makes each year. We annually invest nearly $5 billion dollars, or $420.17 per person, on the maintenance and expansion of Ohio's transportation infrastructure network.
That burden is expected to grow each year as the population in most regions of the state are expected to remain stable or decline, and available resources decrease due to inflation.
In this white paper, GOPC outlines steps that Ohio can undertake now - which do not require new revenue - that can create a modern and fiscally sustainable transportation network that is attractive to business and beneficial to our residents.
These steps include:
truly embrace a fix it first construction policy
develop a mode-neutral transportation network and,
modernizing the board charged with investing in Ohio’s transportation future.
These steps will ensure ODOT departments are working towards preserving existing systems, developing alternative modes, and investing in new highway construction only as a last resort.
