Cambridge & Guernsey County Kick-Off New Era for Ohio Community Spotlight Series

We regularly feature an Ohio city as part of our Ohio Community Spotlight series.

For 2026 we are expanding the series to focus not only on Ohio’s cities but the counties where they are located. To kick-off this new series, this month we feature the City of Cambridge and Guernsey County!

Guernsey County, located in east-central Ohio, is known for its glassmaking, parks, and community events. The county seat, Cambridge, was founded in 1803 and named after Cambridge, Maryland. #GOPCThread

Founded in 1810, Guernsey County was named for the Isle of Guernsey after early settlers migrated from the Channel Islands. Its early economy centered on agriculture, livestock, and frontier trade routes.

The region grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with glassmaking, coal mining, oil and gas discoveries, and expanding rail access. These industries shaped the county’s towns and workforce for generations.

Cambridge’s global identity is tied to glassmaking. Cambridge Glass, founded in 1901, became renowned for its distinctive colors and elegant designs. At its peak, the company employed 750 people. Its legacy endures at the National Museum of Cambridge Glass.

Among unique local retailers is Mosser Glass, a family-owned company producing handmade glassware using traditional molds and methods. Its showroom is a regional draw for collectors.

Kennedy’s Bakery, operating since 1925, is a community landmark in downtown Cambridge known for its homemade pastries. A family business, the bakery is now operated by third generation Kennedys!

Today, one of Guernsey County’s primary industries continues to be agriculture (often led by smaller, family owned farms), often with a focus on livestock and some hay and grain production.

But Guernsey County has also become an oil and gas producer, making this a newer industry in the area. Guernsey has historically been in the 10 most active counties in Ohio for oil and gas production.

Annual events like Dickens Victorian Village draw thousands to Cambridge, strengthening tourism and showcasing the community’s creativity and storytelling tradition

From November-January a visit to the Guernsey County courthouse includes an impressive light show! 85,000 lights and 60 animated displays set to music bring the historic building to life!

Guernsey County is home to Ohio’s largest state Park, Salt Fork, encompassing 17,229 acres. Its trails, lakefront, lodge, and campsites draw year-round visitors and support local outdoor businesses.
