Remediating Brownfields

Since 2021, Ohio’s General Assembly has committed $900 million to support brownfield assessments and cleanup projects. The Brownfield Remediation Program (BRP) has the potential to pump more than $4.5 billion into the state’s economy through private investment, jobs creation, and redevelopment, as well as ongoing activities associated with new end-uses.

GOPC is proud to have championed this investment, working with lawmakers to reactivate land that will house new businesses, homes, and recreation spaces. Still, work remains to clear the thousands of acres for new, productive uses.

A Blueprint for Stronger Communities Includes:

Growing and Strengthening Ohio’s Brownfield Remediation Program

Since 2021, 841 projects in 87 of Ohio’s 88 counties have begun to catalyze significant economic impacts and community benefits across Ohio.

Retaining the program with continued or increased funding of at least $150 million per year will maintain Ohio’s position as a national leader for creating new opportunities for manufacturing, housing, recreation, and more through brownfield remediation.

Updates to the program to improve operations and expedite the application process will move projects through the pipeline faster, maximizing the state’s return on investment.

The Greater Ohio Policy Center and Brownfields Redevelopment

Greater Ohio Policy Center (GOPC) endeavors to unlock the potential of Ohio’s 9,000+ former industrial and commercial sites that are unusable in their current condition. GOPC has documented the positive economic impact that brownfield cleanups can have on Ohio’s cities and town.

Additionally, GOPC is a leading voice on policy changes that allow former industrial sites to be put back into productive use - which include both regulatory reform and the identification of a sustainable funding source for a brownfield clean-up and redevelopment program.

We are proud to have been the leading advocacy organization for the creation of the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program, and the annual host of the Ohio Brownfields Conference, an annual gathering of brownfield professionals, local government officials, and advocates who collectively are working to revitalize Ohio’s communities.
